How long does mehndi last on the skin?

This is the most popular question I get asked by my brides

So what is the answer?

If you’re planning your bridal mehndi, understanding how the stain develops will make or break your experience. Mehndi lasts between one and three weeks. The stain turns a deep reddish-brown and slowly fades as your skin naturally renews itself.

You're unique, and this timeline isn't a one-size-fits-all

A few key factors affect how long it lasts on the skin.

  • Placement on the body

Mehndi lasts the longest on your palms and soles, since the skin there is thicker and can hold the stain for up to three weeks. On the back of your hands, arms, or shoulders, it usually fades faster, lasting about one to two weeks. If you have oily skin, the stain may disappear sooner, while drier skin tends to keep the colour longer.

  • Quality of the henna

Fresh, well-prepared and high-quality henna gives a deeper, longer-lasting colour. Old or low-quality henna often yields a lighter stain that fades quickly. Just because henna is labelled “organic” doesn’t mean it’s better. What really matters is the mix, the ingredients, and how it’s stored.

  • Application and aftercare

The colour gets deeper the longer you leave the paste on and the more care you take. This is why aftercare is one of the most important steps for your bridal mehndi.

Keep the paste on your skin for several hours so the dye can develop fully. Avoid water for the first 24 hours after removing the paste, since water can weaken the stain if it’s exposed too soon.

After the first day, keeping your skin lightly oiled can help the design last longer. Using harsh soaps, scrubbing, or frequent washing of the area will make the stain fade more quickly. If you need to work with water, try to protect the area as much as possible.

  • Body and environment

Everyone’s skin reacts a little differently to mehndi. Things like your body heat, skin type, and daily routines can affect how the colour develops. Spending time in the sun, swimming in chlorinated pools, or being in salt water can all make the stain fade faster. The colour looks its best during the first few days. Over the next week, it will start to soften and then slowly fade away.
